It’s been bugging me that I don’t have a lot of female characters on my sketch covers, mostly because I tend to go by the titles and most of my covers (lets face it) are Batman or Batman related. Hopefully this Wonder Woman cover begins the process of rectifying that.

I have heard the announcement and I posses a VERY strong opinion about it. The image above shows the All-New Marvel NOW Thor. She is a woman. I absolutely adore and support strong female characters in comics (Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Batgirl, Daisy Johnson, Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, Jean Grey, She-Hulk etc.) I honestly believe that this is a bad call. I really like Thor (ORIGINAL version) and I have no idea what Jason Aaron is thinking. His story telling and Esad T. Ribić’s art has done so much for the character and his popularity.

I’m a dude and I honestly find this highly offensive to both men and women. I can’t speak for female Marvel/Thor fans, but I highly doubt that they want the Son of Odin undergoing any gender bending of any kind. For example I am a huge fan of heroes such as Wonder Woman and Jean Grey (I’m using both Marvel & DC characters as examples). If they were to make either of them a man, even temporarily, I would highly upset and extremely heartbroken and I would stop buying all titles in which they were featured. If anyone else wants to share their opinion about this decision, I would love to hear it. Remember there is NO wrong opinion.

Honestly speaking, I think this opens up the character to more development. We’ve had three Thors existing who are completely unaware how the other came to be who they are. King Thor excluded…or included depending on how Aaron writes how time behaves.

A female Thor could open the door for possible future interactions with Thor the Unworthy where he shows more depth and becomes a teacher. Passing on his own inexperiences as cautionary tales of how not to wield Mjolnir. It’s very exciting just thinking about the potential for new stories with new characters and new challenges. And I’ve always enjoyed that about comic books in general. They set up these herculean challenges and the characters usually in some for rise to the challenge and thats the beauty of it. To watch characters grow, and this female Thor is offering us a glimpse into nothing different.

Making female characters male is not the same as the reverse. If nothing else, there’s gonna be a high profile character that’s a woman. And not like in a Captain Marvel way (don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying the hell out of Cap but she doesn’t have the notoriety or the history that Thor does. THIS IS NOT A DISS ON THE CHARACTER, KELLY SUE OR ANY OF THE ORHER CREATORS THAT HAVE BUILT THAT CHARACTER.) Again, Jason Aaron is a phenomenal writer and his run on Thor thus far has been one of the best in recent memory. I trust him to do a quality book.

Adding to all previous points (which I agree with):

a) Thor has been a woman before, and it has worked just fine.

b) That armor is boss; she looks super cool.

c) Replacement Thors rule: Beta Ray Bill, ThunderStrike… even future Whitesnake Thor’s awesome. Female Warrior Thor will be just as great (and hey, old Thor will still be around too, so everyone gets their cake! Mine’s Fudgy the Whale!)

d) Anyone still upset with this after all that can just look at Superior Spider-Man and know that this is probably a temporary change anyway. Chill out: It’s comics.
